For Erica, the pandemic didn’t just disrupt routines… it quietly took something much deeper.
Living with Down syndrome, Erica spent years building independence, confidence, and a sense of purpose. But as the world shut down, so did her world. Slowly, the structure she relied on disappeared. The activities she once loved no longer brought her joy. Even the simplest daily tasks became overwhelming. Her family watched, heartbroken, as she withdrew, unsure how to help her find her way back.
“It felt like we lost her,” her parents shared.
When Erica and her family came to Living and Learning Enrichment Center during this difficult time, they weren’t looking for a quick fix. They were searching for hope.
And that’s where the journey began—not with expectations, but with understanding.
At Living and Learning, we believe in meeting individuals exactly where they are. Through a community-based vocational program located closer to Erica’s home in West Bloomfield, we helped replace isolation with something powerful: a reason to engage again. A reason to show up. A reason to believe that progress was still possible.
Over the past 19 months, and six years after the initial regression, Erica’s transformation has been nothing short of inspiring.
Today, she wakes up with purpose. She sets her own alarm, prepares for her day, and heads to work with pride. Whether she’s organizing paperwork at a local nonprofit or supporting operations in a professional office environment, she has rediscovered the dignity and fulfillment that comes from meaningful work.
But the changes go beyond the workplace.
Erica has regained a sense of autonomy, taking initiative at home, helping others, and re-engaging with the world around her. With the support of her caring vocational coaches, she’s also found new ways to communicate, using a cooperative journal to share her experiences and celebrate her progress with her parents and our staff.
Her mother describes life as sometimes feeling like a “house of cards,” where even a small disruption can cause everything to collapse, turning a difficult moment into an
overwhelming day. What has made the difference is not perfection, but support. Through consistent coaching and encouragement, Erica is learning how to pivot in those moments. What once might have derailed her entire day is now something she can move through with confidence, resilience, and a growing sense of control.
And in turn, those better moments have become better days…not just for Erica, but for her whole family.
Most importantly, she is finding herself again.
This journey is a reminder that progress is rarely linear, and that setbacks, even profound ones, do not define a person’s or a family’s future. With the right support, patience, and belief, growth is always possible.
At Living and Learning, we don’t just provide disability support services. We walk alongside individuals and families through some of their most challenging moments, helping restore confidence, rebuild independence, and reignite hope.
Because everyone deserves the chance to rediscover their purpose.
