We are incredibly honored to have been featured on Channel 4’s Live in the D, where we had the opportunity to share the heart behind Living and Learning Enrichment Center with viewers across Southeast Michigan.
Representing Living and Learning were our Art Director, Tina Spencer, and John, a member of both our Vocational Program and Baseline Studio. Together, they shared what makes our organization so special, highlighting our Baseline Studio, Farm Stand, employment opportunities, and the life-changing impact our programs have on the individuals we serve.
One of the most powerful moments of the interview came when John spoke from the heart about what Living and Learning means to him.
“Living and Learning is a place where I feel welcomed. I feel I can be myself. I feel important. I feel loved, heard, seen, and so much more. It makes me feel important and wanted. Knowing that I am selling and making something people want to buy really makes me happy. Coming to Living and Learning makes me feel included, wanted, and appreciated.”
His words beautifully capture the environment we strive to create every single day. Living and Learning is more than a program. It is a community where every individual is valued, encouraged, and empowered to discover their strengths and reach their full potential.
John also shared the pride he feels through his work in Baseline Studio.
“It is so special to know that people are buying the stuff I make. It makes me so happy.”
Every handcrafted item sold through Baseline Studio and our Farm Stand represents much more than a finished product. It represents creativity, determination, skill development, and confidence. When someone purchases a piece created by one of our members, they are supporting meaningful opportunities for adults with disabilities while celebrating the incredible talents of the artists and makers behind each item.
During the interview, Tina shared how Baseline Studio and the Farm Stand provide members with hands-on experiences that teach valuable vocational and life skills. From designing artwork and creating handcrafted products to growing produce, harvesting flowers, packaging goods, and preparing items for sale, our members are involved in every step of the process. Everything sold at our Farm Stand is made or grown by our members right here on our campus.
These experiences build more than technical skills. They foster independence, confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and pride in a job well done. Members see the direct impact of their work, knowing that the community values what they create.
Moments like this television feature allow us to share our mission with a broader audience, but the real story happens every day inside our classrooms, studios, gardens, and workplaces. It happens when a member gains confidence, discovers a new passion, secures employment, creates something they’re proud of, or simply feels like they belong.
This is why we do what we do.
